Compliance protects your mission

Registered charities must file a T3010 Registered Charity Information Return within six months of year-end or risk revocation — and revocation means losing the ability to issue donation receipts, a revocation tax of 100% of remaining assets, and a difficult re-registration process. Non-profit organizations that are not charities may still have to file a T1044 information return and a T2 corporate return even though they pay no tax.

Funders and boards expect clear financial statements with restricted-fund tracking, and the CRA expects donation receipts to meet exact content requirements. Trim Tax gives charities, religious organizations, community associations, clubs and condominium corporations a reliable accounting function so leaders can focus on the mission.

Fund accounting your treasurer and your auditor can follow

Non-profit accounting differs from business accounting: restricted and unrestricted funds must be tracked separately, deferred contributions recognised correctly, capital assets handled under ASNPO, and grant spending reported back to funders on their templates.

We set up your bookkeeping so these distinctions are built in from the first transaction, produce board reports that answer the questions directors actually ask, and prepare year-end statements that a review or audit engagement can rely on where your bylaws or funders require one.

Frequently asked questions

The CRA can revoke registration for failure to file, typically after a notice and a grace period. If you file quickly, revocation can usually be avoided; if status has already been revoked, re-registration requires filing all outstanding returns and paying a late-filing penalty, and we manage the process.
Many do. Incorporated NPOs generally file a T2 (usually nil), and NPOs with more than $10,000 in investment income or dividends, or with assets over $200,000, must also file a T1044 information return within six months of year-end.
Registered charities and qualifying non-profits can claim a public service body rebate on a percentage of GST/HST paid — 50% of the federal portion and, in Ontario, 82% of the provincial portion for charities. We file the rebate with your regular reporting.
A statement that it is an official receipt for income tax purposes, the charity's name, address and registration number, the receipt serial number, date of donation and issue, donor name and address, the eligible amount, any advantage received, and the CRA's website reference. Receipts missing elements can be disallowed on audit.
Registered charities generally cannot pay directors for their director duties, though reimbursement of expenses is fine and some provinces allow limited exceptions; NPOs are governed by their bylaws and incorporating statute. We advise on what your governing documents and the CRA allow.
Yes. We present statements to boards and finance committees virtually or in person in the GTA, and we help treasurers prepare for annual general meetings.
