Facing the CRA? Get Licensed Representation and a Clear Way Forward

Audits, unfiled returns, tax debt, liens, frozen accounts and garnishments — Trim Tax's CPAs take over the CRA file, respond on your behalf and resolve the problem at its root.

You do not have to deal with the CRA alone

CRA problems rarely fix themselves. Interest compounds daily, review letters escalate to demands, demands escalate to arbitrary assessments, and assessments escalate to liens, requirements to pay and frozen accounts. By the time enforcement starts, most people have stopped opening the envelopes.

Trim Tax specialises in Canadian tax resolution: we become your authorized representative, review your entire CRA account, correct the filings that caused the problem, and negotiate a compliant path forward. Everything is handled confidentially and without judgment — most of our clients are ordinary people and business owners who fell behind.

We are not affiliated with the Canada Revenue Agency. We are independent licensed professionals who represent you, and we will tell you plainly when a lawyer or licensed insolvency trustee is the better option.

Fixing the cause, not just the symptom

A CRA balance is almost always a symptom of something else: returns that were never filed (so the CRA estimated your income), an audit that disallowed expenses you could not document, HST or payroll that was collected but not remitted, or a reassessment nobody responded to within the 90-day objection window.

Reducing a balance sustainably means fixing that underlying filing. When actual returns replace arbitrary assessments, when documented expenses replace disallowed ones, and when relief applications remove penalties and interest that the rules allow, the balance changes — and a payment plan on the corrected amount is one the CRA will accept.

How we resolve CRA problems

01

Authorization

you sign the CRA's AUT-01 form (or authorize us online through My Account or My Business Account) so we can access your file and speak to the CRA for you.
02

Full account review

we pull every assessment, balance, missing return and enforcement action across income tax, HST and payroll accounts to see the whole picture before recommending anything.
03

Root-cause fix

we prepare or amend the returns that created the balance — the assessed amount usually drops once actual figures replace arbitrary ones.
04

Dispute where warranted

a Notice of Objection within 90 days of an assessment, an application to extend the objection deadline where it has passed, or a request for adjustment where the CRA's numbers are wrong.
05

Relief applications

Taxpayer Relief (RC4288) to cancel penalties and interest where circumstances qualify — serious illness, financial hardship, CRA delay or error, natural disaster — and the Voluntary Disclosures Program for unreported income before the CRA finds it.
06

Payment arrangement

a realistic instalment plan negotiated with CRA Collections, with financial disclosure prepared by us, to lift garnishments and release frozen accounts.
07

Audit defence

we prepare the documentation, attend meetings, manage all correspondence and challenge proposed adjustments until the audit closes.
08

Prevention

clean books, filing calendars and instalment planning so it does not happen again.

Why choose Trim Tax for CRA matters

  • Licensed CPAs with 15+ years of audit and resolution experience — not a call centre or a lead-generation service that passes your file to someone else.
  • Authorized to represent you directly with CRA auditors, appeals officers and collections agents.
  • We fix the underlying filings, which is the only durable way to reduce a balance and stop enforcement.
  • Flat-rate engagements priced by phase and quoted after a free, confidential review — you control the commitment.
  • Honest scope: if a tax lawyer (solicitor-client privilege, Tax Court) or a licensed insolvency trustee (proposal or bankruptcy) is the better route, we say so and refer you.
  • Bookkeeping, HST, payroll and tax under one roof, so the rebuild and the resolution happen together.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Once you authorize Trim Tax as your representative, we can review your account, respond to notices, submit documents, file objections and negotiate with collections on your behalf. You will not have to take the calls.
We cannot guarantee a reduced balance and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we can do is correct inaccurate assessments, claim missed deductions and credits, and apply for penalty and interest relief where the CRA's rules allow it. In many cases the corrected balance is materially lower than the arbitrary one.
The CRA can normally reassess within three years of the original assessment (four for many corporations), but there is no limit where returns were never filed or where misrepresentation is alleged. Unfiled years stay open indefinitely, which is why filing them is the first step.
Prosecution is rare when a taxpayer comes forward voluntarily and files. The Voluntary Disclosures Program exists precisely to encourage this and can provide penalty relief and protection from prosecution where the disclosure is voluntary, complete and involves a penalty. We assess eligibility before anything is submitted.
We can typically obtain authorization and contact CRA Collections within one to two business days. Releasing a freeze usually requires filing outstanding returns and agreeing to a payment arrangement supported by financial disclosure; we prepare both.
Not necessarily. You can apply for an extension within one year after the objection deadline if you can show you intended to object and acted as soon as circumstances permitted. Outside that window, a request for adjustment or taxpayer relief may still be available.
