Trim Tax

Personal Tax Returns Prepared by CPAs — Accurate, On Time, Nothing Missed

From a single T4 to self-employed income, rental property, investments and foreign assets, Trim Tax prepares and e-files your T1 return so you pay only what you legally owe — and not a dollar more.

Personal tax filing that actually saves you money

Most Canadians overpay because they miss credits, misreport self-employed income, or run out of time before April 30. Tax software cannot ask the questions a CPA asks: Did you work from home? Did your child's tuition carry forward? Did you move for work? Did you sell crypto? Did you pay for a parent's care?

Trim Tax reviews your full picture — employment income, side businesses, investments, rental property, medical expenses, moving costs, tuition, childcare, disability and foreign income — and prepares a return that claims everything you are entitled to while staying fully CRA-compliant.

The difference shows up in three places: a lower balance or larger refund this year, a return that withstands a CRA review, and a plan for next year so you are not surprised again.

We serve clients in person in Toronto, Vaughan, Mississauga and across the GTA, and virtually in every province and territory. Send your slips through our secure portal, approve a plain-language summary online, and we e-file directly with the CRA.

Self-employed, freelance and gig income done properly

If you earn income outside a T4 — consulting, contracting, rideshare, delivery, tutoring, photography, online sales — the CRA expects a Statement of Business or Professional Activities (T2125) with revenue, expenses, vehicle use and home-office claims properly supported.

This is where most self-prepared returns go wrong: expenses are either under-claimed out of caution or over-claimed without records, and HST registration is missed once revenue passes $30,000. Trim Tax builds the T2125 from your actual records, sets up a simple system to track expenses going forward, advises on HST registration and instalments, and makes sure your June 15 filing deadline does not hide the fact that any balance is still due April 30.

Frequently asked questions

Most individuals must file and pay by April 30. If you or your spouse or common-law partner were self-employed, the filing deadline extends to June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30 — interest starts accruing on May 1 regardless of the later filing date.
Yes, we routinely prepare multiple years at once. Late-filing penalties apply only where tax is owing (5% of the balance plus 1% per month, doubled for repeat late filers), so many catch-up returns generate refunds or benefits rather than penalties. Where unreported income is involved, we assess eligibility for the Voluntary Disclosures Program before anything is filed.
Reasonable expenses incurred to earn business income: home-office costs (a proportion of rent or mortgage interest, utilities, insurance), vehicle expenses supported by a log, supplies, subcontractors, advertising, professional fees, bank charges, phone and internet, and capital cost allowance on equipment. We document each claim so it withstands a review.
Yes. Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition. Depending on the activity it is taxed as a capital gain or as business income. We reconcile exchange reports, calculate adjusted cost base and report correctly.
We prepare federal returns for Quebec residents and coordinate the provincial TP-1 filing; ask us about your specific situation.
Simple returns start at a fixed rate; self-employed, rental and investment returns are quoted after the consultation. You always know the fee before we start.
